Oncology social workers are licensed professionals trained in helping people cope with a cancer diagnosis.
They provide counseling, guidance and education about various topics such as:
- Managing emotions
- Talking with your loved ones, including children, about your diagnosis and treatment
- Caregiving needs
- The importance of completing an advance directive and sharing your medical decisions with your loved ones, regardless of your type or stage of cancer
- Palliative Care
- Coping with a diagnosis of advanced cancer
- Understanding and accessing disability benefits and health insurance
- Employment related concerns such as FMLA and The Americans with Disabilities Act
- Finding community resources which may be helpful to you
